How To Keep The Kids Occupied If You Have To Work From Home
Working from home can be extremely stressful – even more so if the kids are at home at the same time. There are many ways to keep the kids occupied when you are working which mean minimal distractions for you.
Sometimes there may even be both parents working from home which requires a shift pattern with one working and one dealing with the kids. @XplodingUnicorn on Twitter tweeted this hilarious but relatable message recently: “I’m upstairs on my laptop. My wife is downstairs with the kids. She’s texting me a rolling list of who’s grounded. Working from home is going well.” Want to avoid this? Here are some tried and tested ways to keep the kids occupied when working from home.
Kids need some time to adjust to spending more time at home, especially when they won’t be getting the attention they want from their parents. It can be hard for them to understand that their parents still need to work, and this might mean that they mess around.
It is important to make sure that your children are stimulated, and that their minds are kept busy. When stuck indoors all day every day, it can be easy to become bored of doing the same things repeatedly. Finding new and exciting things that they can do from home is essential – sometimes that element of something being new is exactly what they need.
Trying some new games that they can play alone or with their siblings may be worth trying. These will often require them to use their brain and really concentrate which means they can be occupied for quite some time.
Working on their sensory and fine motor skills is also a great option. They believe that they are doing something fun and you can be assured that they are working on these skills whilst being kept busy so you can get some work done.
If you want to keep noise to a minimum so you can work, this can be quite difficult with children. Some quiet activities such as colouring, puzzles or building blocks can keep their attention for quite some time whilst providing less of a distraction for you.
Do not feel guilty about doing what you must do to get work done. If our suggested activities have all been done or they aren’t working, some tablet or TV time isn’t a bad thing. As long as your child isn’t watching all day – too much screen time can affect them negatively – then a little screen time is a good thing if it makes everyone happy.
Finally, why not set them some reading time? They can read books they already own, rotating the books on their bookshelves, or you can buy them some new books to get lost in. A good book will always capture a child’s attention.
