Arts and crafts birthday parties – Get their imagination flowing!

Party arts and crafts table

Arts and crafts can make a fantastic addition to a child’s birthday party. Giving kids something to focus on and allowing them to flex their creative muscles, arts and crafts can help your party to go with a swing. For older children, it can even be the main focus of the party. In order to get the most out of your creative activity, you need to do a little planning. Here are our top tips for combining arts and crafts with your child’s birthday party.

Create a theme

If your child’s party has an overall theme, make sure your arts and crafts activity fits in with it. So, for example, if you’ve gone for a superhero themed party, have the kids create superhero masks, decorate cupcakes or design their very own superhero t-shirts. If your child’s party doesn’t have a theme, it’s still a good idea to create one for the arts and crafts activity. Most kids find it easier to be creative when they’re set a challenge or are given inspiration in a specific area. You could choose a space theme, an animal theme or an ocean theme or base the activity around the characters from your child’s favourite film. Baker Ross has a wide selection of themed craft ideas ideal for parties.

Invest in good-quality materials

All arts and crafts activities will require a little investment in materials. Although you don’t need to spend a fortune on glue, glitter, scissors and card, it’s a good idea to get materials that are of a reasonable quality. In general, good-quality materials are easier to work with and are longer lasting than budget alternatives. If the creations the kids are working on are designed to be taken home and shown off to mum and dad, you’ll want to ensure they don’t fall apart the minute the party is over!

Start a competition

A great way to get kids excited about an arts and crafts activity is to turn it into a competition. You can either divide the children into teams or have them working individually to create original and unique pieces. Set a time limit for the work to be done and then award a prize for the best creation. In order to keep everyone happy, it’s a good idea to have a few runner-up prizes on hand so no one goes home empty-handed.

Create something long-lasting

Creating something tangible and long-lasting will give kids something fantastic to look back on when they’re older. If the children are young, you could have them paint on a stone or blank piece of pottery instead of paper to add a bit of longevity to the project. Older children can decorate t-shirts, make beaded jewellery, decorate photo frames or make their own props for your ‘selfie’ area. Not only are they fun to create at the party, but the children will have a lasting reminder of the fun they had.
