Children’s entertainers come in all shapes and sizes, the good, the bad, and the just plain scary! Ever wondered what it takes to be a great children’s entertainer? We’ve got our top must-haves for children’s entertainers, whether you’re wondering if you’ve got what it takes, or you’re looking for a children’s entertainer for your next party, this blog is for you.

Get on their level

It really does help if you’re a big kid at heart. Understanding how children think and what they find funny will really help get the party started. You have to lead by example, showing them how to join in and have fun. Swot up on all the latest TV shows and movies, games and crazes so you can relate to your young audience, being a top class children’s entertainer is all about being “down with the kids”!

Be flexible

No, you don’t have to be a contortionist to be a good children’s entertainer, but you do have to be flexible in your approach to every party. You need to be able to tailor your jokes and tricks to different ages and abilities to really ensure all the children get the most out of the party. Different groups of children will respond in different ways, so if your usual routine isn’t getting the desired response you’ll need to think on your feet to get everyone joining in.

Good sense of humour

Children’s entertainment is all about the laughs, whether it’s well-rehearsed jokes or a bit of slapstick comedy. So make them laugh and be a bit silly. Have a few icebreakers up your sleeve to get everyone relaxed and giggling. And if you can raise a smile out of the parents too then you’re really on to a winner!

Be able to put parents at ease

Organising a children’s party can be pretty stressful. Parents will have called in the professionals so entertaining the kids is one less thing to worry about. So make sure you do just that. By showing parents from the very beginning that you have the situation under control you’ll put them at ease, leaving them to concentrate on the other aspects of the party.

Work well under pressure

Not every party will run smoothly. From technical mishaps to screaming toddlers and everything in between. A good children’s party entertainer will be able to work through any situation professionally and without breaking a sweat.

Good Memory

Not just for the script and the tricks, but for the kids’ names! Thankfully the likes of Moon Unit, Pilot Inspektor and Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily are few and far between, but you will still have 15-20+ names to remember! Being able to address the kids by name makes them feel special, so a good children’s entertainer will remember everyone’s names, even the slightly bonkers ones!

Lots of energy from start to finish

If there is one thing that a children’s entertainer needs, it’s energy. Buckets of the stuff! Because entertaining 30 sugar-fulled six-year-olds is tiring and you really don’t want to be remembered as the entertainer who was flagging half way through! And don’t think that being a children’s DJ is an easier gig. Oh, no! You’ll need to be able to listen to “Can’t Stop the Feeling” at least three times over a weekend and still sound like you’re enjoying it!
