Day 7 A Winter Woodland Walk

Family walking in the woods at Christmas

There is nothing quite like wrapping up and going for a woodland walk on a crisp winter’s afternoon. A woodland walk is a great chance for the whole family to enjoy some down time together before Christmas. You can find a woodland walk near you at the Woodland Trust.  For a bit of extra fun, why not try one of our woodland walk activities.

Woodland I spy is a great game for children of all ages. For very small children you could play using the colour of an object rather than its first letter, “I spy something that is orange…”

A Scavenger Hunt is a brilliant way to get the kids to take a closer look at nature. You could challenge them to find a list of objects; an acorn, a leaf, a big stick. Or maybe an A to Z scavenger hunt where they have to find something beginning with each letter of the alphabet! You can make is as difficult or as easy as you like, depending on the age of the children. You can get a free Scavenger Hunt printable here.

Challenge the children to find the biggest or smallest object. This might be a stick or a stone or a leaf, whatever you spot as you’re walking. For example, “Who can find the biggest leaf?” and watch as they all try to out-do each other!

And whilst you’re out, believe it or not, you are in the perfect place to pick up supplies for our next Christmas activity. Pine cones!

Make sure your pine cones are nice and dry and give them a good shake to get rid of any seeds. You can then paint them using acrylic paint, glitter, or both!

Try using white paint for a snowy effect.

Use ribbon or string tied to the bottom of your pine cone to hang. You can hang them individually or in a garland to wrap around your Christmas tree.

We’d love to see your pinecone creations. Share them with us on our Facebook page or on Twitter using #CaptainChristmas
