Thrilling party ideas for Halloween

From a pumpkin decorating party and scary movie night to a game of hide and shriek or a creepy crawly tea party, there’s no reason not to give a ghoulishly good party this Halloween.

@onecrazyhouse: “After all, you’ve scoured the stores to come up with the perfect costume, set up the skeleton at the entry holding a lantern and built up a candy stash to make Willy Wonka proud. Now, all you have to do is plan the perfect Halloween party with fun Halloween party games.”

Here at Captain Fantastic, we have had a lot of fun coming up with a spooktacularly impressive list of things to do during this year’s witching evening on October 31, such as:

Hide and shriek

Get everyone at the party to dress up as a wicked witch or wizardly warlock, complete with cloak, pointy hat and big warty nose. Remember to include a broomstick for the former and staff or a Harry Potter-style wand for the latter). The object of the game is to get them to hide in the garden or house – complete with costume and accoutrements (it’s not easy with that big nose and a broomstick). The last person not caught by the Witchfinder General (i.e. you) wins the game and is awarded the title of the top witch (or warlock).

Scary movie night
We’re all aware that plenty of terrifyingly good scary movies are out there. Your job is to find a couple that most kids and/or adults will like. Then you can get started on preparing for your movie marathon. Some of our favourite freaky movies for kids include the Halloween favourite – The Addams Family, The Witches, The Craft and the 80s classic, Gremlins. Just make sure you stock up with plenty of gory treats to munch on while watching. Remember to heighten the fear by turning all the lights off before the first spine-tingling movie theme comes on. That way, you’ll get even bigger shrieks at the scary bits.

Creepy crawly tea party
Host a creepy crawly tea party with bugs and ghoulish delights – rather in the form of a cream tea but without the standard fayre. Instead, make coffin sandwiches using ketchup for blood.  Get edible cake toppers in the shape of spiders, ants, and cockroaches, then place them on – and in – the cupcakes. Or, how about having a go at making these zombie brain cupcakes? Make sure you’re using cobwebs for a tea cloth and serve up blood-coloured juices or Halloween mocktails complete with fangs and edible eyeballs.

Ghoulish guessing quiz night
Have an eerily exciting quiz game with plenty of Halloween-related questions and answers. That’ll get your guests into the spirit of both fear and fun as they conjure up previous nightmare movie plots and other haunting happenings. Questions could be along the lines of Why do women look in mirrors while walking downstairs at midnight on Halloween?” Answer: To see their boyfriends.” Also, ”what did Chandler and Ross dress up as in the Cheers Halloween episode?” Answer: “A pink bunny and Spud-Nik, respectively.” Ensure you have buzzers for each team – preferably ones that scream or have an evil laugh.
