Keeping the Magic of Christmas Alive Under Lockdown

Across the world there will be children worrying about what Christmas 2020 is going to look like. There is anxiety about being able to spend Christmas with their grandparents and other family members, as well as worry about whether Father Christmas will be able to visit them!

Here at Captain Fantastic we are passionate about making children happy for those special occasions in their lives. Christmas is one of those occasions.

2020 has been a year unlike anything anyone living has seen before. So, in order to help keep the magic alive during a lockdown Christmas, Captain Fantastic will be putting on a special Christmas Day Show at Midday on Christmas Day on our Facebook page

We have also decided to create a guide to help you keep the magic of Christmas alive under lockdown. Read on to find out how to make your little ones merry this Christmas.

Elf on The Shelf

That mischievous little fellow is back again! We have mixed feelings about him this year, especially after seeing a new trend on social media. People are quarantining their elf for 14 days before moving him around the house. Admittedly, this will save you from having to think up all sorts of new and inventive places to put the little chap every night.

But we’re concerned by what some young children will think of the elf being quarantined. Some sensitive souls might then worry that if Elf has been quarantined, Santa will be too. And what if there are no presents?! So we suggest treading carefully with Elf this year and only risking quarantining him if you are certain that your children will accept the joke in good humour.

Festive Baking

Ah, the smell of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and orange peel. They instantly conjure up memories of festive feelings in even the most Scrooge-like of people. On a dark, wet day in December what better way to occupy the children by getting them to bake some festive treats!

It’s even more exciting if the treats are then going to be decorated and hung on the tree afterwards too. What’s more, homemade Christmas tree decorations are really on-trend this year.

Of course, if you’ve got dogs, hanging edible decorations on the Christmas tree should only be done in a home with well-behaved pooches!

Games to Play At Home

Children love competing amongst themselves or against their parents, so this is a great game to play to get everyone’s pulse racing! Get the children to help you wrap presents for the other family members like grandparents, cousins and aunts and uncles as a timed activity. The fastest (and neatest!) person is the winner! Also, it will save you a lot of time wrapping presents later on! Win win!

Christmas Movie Night

Our favourite here at Captain Fantastic HQ is Love Actually. Everyone has their favourite festive film. This year, rather than simply bunging it on the TV, make a night of it to heighten the Christmas magic instead! Get some popcorn, tell the family to put their Christmas PJs on and hand out the hot chocolate – it’s time to get snuggly with a Christmas movie classic! And if your family doesn’t have a favourite Christmas movie yet, there are plenty to watch. Maybe you will discover one you can treasure forever…?

Watch a Pantomime – online!

Going to the pantomime is an annual Christmas pastime for lots of people. But this year, because of the necessary restrictions in place due to Covid, lots of people will be missing their trip to the theatre.

However, this needn’t be the case! Lots of theatres are putting on online shows that you can watch from the safety of your home. Check with your local theatre to see if they are putting on an online production of a pantomime. And it’s not just about having a great evening in – this is a great way to support the arts industry whilst having fun with your family.

Donate old toys and clothes – it’s the season of goodwill!

This Christmas will be very tough for lots of families with parents being furloughed, or even having been made redundant. Get your children to help you make someone else’s Christmas special by having a good clear out of their unwanted clothes and toys before they get more for Christmas. It could definitely make someone else’s Christmas magical and it will save you the job of doing it all by yourself in the new year. There are plenty of charities asking for donations this year.

Have A Christmas Party At Home

Parties are what Captain Fantastic does best. Of course, getting large groups of people together at the moment for any reason is not permitted, but we are all able to connect online! This year we have decided to show the world that Christmas is still the most wonderful time of the year, by hosting online Christmas parties. We have Christmas tunes, interactive games, magic or challenges for older children as well as elves, reindeer, sing-alongs, balloons and sweets and even the Big Man himself. They are all available to help you celebrate with your dearest, even if they are not the nearest!

Covid hasn’t cancelled Christmas!

Covid hasn’t cancelled Christmas, and it’s important that your children know that’s not the case. At Captain Fantastic, we are determined to make sure that everyone can still have a wonderful Christmas that they can look back on fondly.
