Whatever the time of year, when you are planning a children’s party it is often necessary to provide some hot food. Whenever you think of hot party food, whether it’s a party for children or for adults, the first things that spring to mind are BBQ foods like hot dogs and burgers. However, if you are looking to dish up something more interesting or exciting than the typical BBQ foods, we are here to help!
One of our favourite ideas is to host a food-themed party! This simplifies things no end, making the entertainment and the food the centre of the event.
One way to put the food at the heart of the party and keep everyone happy is to host a pizza-making party. This fabulous idea is very easy to organise as well as easy on the bank balance. It works really well if you are having a party at home or in your garden, especially if you have a pizza oven!
Lots of people have now built pizza ovens in their gardens to be able to experiment with making their own exciting pizza creations. If you have your own pizza oven at home, then what better way to make sure you are getting your value for money on the purchase than by using it to make spectacular hot food for your child’s party? If the pizzas are the star attraction of the party food, then all you need to arrange is the birthday cake and some nibbles like carrot, cucumber and red pepper crudités to make sure that everyone is getting some veg in their diet that day.
Finally, arrange plates full of toppings that you think the children might like, such as pepperoni slices, ham, salami, bowls of grated mozzarella, grated cheddar, grated Parmesan and vegetables like sliced mushrooms, sweetcorn, peppers, red onion. After that it is just a matter of letting the children get creative as they make their own dinner. Of course, pizzas can be made to suit a wide range of dietary requirements, so this is a brilliant idea if you know you will be catering for a mixed crowd. Then really ‘wow’ them with a pizza-themed birthday cake to end the celebrations!
Another hot food option is to make the most of convenience, ‘pop them in the oven’ party foods that you find in the supermarket like onion bhajis, samosas, pakoras, etc. or even
prawn sesame toast. Classics like mini quiches, but particularly pigs in blankets are a massive hit for children, especially when a bowl of tomato sauce is served alongside them. This might take some juggling to organise bringing all of the food out, particularly if you only have one oven and lots of hungry mouths to feed. Nonetheless, it’s a great way to serve up some exciting hot food without relying on firing up the BBQ once again. It also saves you several hours of preparing food as they are all ready to go straight in the oven.
Alternatively, depending on the number of children you need to feed, you could always order the birthday boy or girl’s favourite takeaway! This is a great option for a sleepover birthday party and again it saves you a lot of effort earlier on in the day. There are lots of fabulous ideas if you are planning on hosting a sleepover themed birthday party. You could buy your little guests matching pyjamas to wear for the night too. These work really well as a memento of the night as well as looking fabulous in any photographs you might want to take, or that they might want to have taken of them all enjoying themselves with their friends. A sleepover is a great party theme for children of both genders and of a wide age range.
Another wonderful idea for hot party food is a fondue! Everyone loves a traditional cheese fondue, but why not go fondue mad and do two fondues?! Try a cheese one for the main course and then a chocolate fondue with strawberries, grapes, cake bites and marshmallows for pudding! A fondue is a surprisingly easy hot party food that can be prepped in advance leaving you with plenty of time to set up the party area.
Bear in mind that if you plan on doing two fondues, you will need two fondue sets. You won’t have the time to wash up one set and create the chocolate fondue in time for your guests. If after all of those hot party food ideas you are still looking for some inspiration on what to serve your little guests, then how about a pancake-themed birthday brunch party? This unique idea is a sure hit with children of all ages. Everyone loves pancakes, so this fabulously fun idea will certainly be the talk of the playground afterwards.
You can go to town and serve perfectly crisped bacon to go with your pancakes or keep it simple with bowls of berries, chopped bananas, chocolate spread, maple syrup – it’s up to you! These are simple toppings to put together with minimal fuss meaning you will have a stress-free day, as well as it being economically-friendly.
The other advantage of a pancake-themed birthday brunch is that if the party is earlier in the day, you can still enjoy the rest of the day with the family. Plan an afternoon out, or relax together afterwards, by curling up with your birthday boy or girl in front of a film.
