“I’m bored!” – Those dreaded words from your little one on a day when it’s bucketing down with rain. After they’ve watched TV or played on the tablet and snacked, what else is there to do to keep your kids entertained on a drizzly day? Summer might be around the corner but that doesn’t mean good ol’ Blighty weather won’t stop showering. Because you can never be sure when the sun will be shining, it’s good to have a number of rainy-day activities for kids up your sleeve. Pull them out when your little one starts to get restless and you’ll have them distracted from their boredom in no time.
Whatever your child is into, there’s an activity to suit their tastes. If they’re artistic, try out some arts and crafts. Perhaps they like helping out in the kitchen? There are fun recipes to try together. How about sporty kids? Dance and jump about to wear them out and have them ready for bed nice and early. Explore these ideas and some more below, and avoid cabin fever like a pro parent.
Get Painting
For budding artists, this is a great activity. If you’re worried about the mess, stick to water-based paints and prepare the space with plenty of newspaper or plastic sheeting. You could try using odds and ends from around the home to create sculptures with some PVA glue – think empty toilet rolls, plastic containers and egg boxes. When your little one has created their masterpiece, display it proudly in your home to show them your appreciation.
Have a Bake Off
For kids who love to crack eggs and lick the spoon, baking together on a rainy day is sure to be fun. How about some cookies with their name in icing? You can use them as name places for dinner later on in the evening – something they’re sure to be very proud of. Or how about a foodie alternative to playdough with these bread shapes?
Build a Sofa Fort
Kids tend to love building dens and when it’s hammering down outside, a cosy hideaway is sure to pass some time and allow them to chill out too. Using the cushions from the sofa, along with a blanket and some pillows from the bedroom is all they need. Once built, they can crawl inside and enjoy some downtime – perhaps you could play Sleeping Lions?
Host a Talent Show
Great for families with two or more children, this is a chance for everyone to get involved and express themselves. Decide on a judging panel and pick some superstars to take centre stage. Play some music and get singing and dancing! The best act can perhaps win a prize, along with the runners up of course. If you’re on the judging panel, start practising your best Simon Cowell impersonation: “I didn’t like it… I loved it”.
For more rainy-day activity ideas, check out this post. There are plenty more fun things to try such as going on a scavenger hunt, conducting a science experiment, and having a clear-out – this one doesn’t sound as appealing but perhaps you can encourage them by promising a new toy or piece of clothing to replace the old stuff.
Finally, we wish you a happy rainy day!
