Rumour has it that the sunny weather is hanging around for another month. So if your child has a birthday coming up in the next few weeks, why not have a party outside? We’ve rounded up our top tips to ensure your summer party sizzles!
How much space do you have?
The size of your garden will determine how many people you can invite as well as the type of entertainment you choose. Plan your space, where will the entertainment go? Will everyone have enough space to run around without trampling on the flowers? If your space is on the small side, do the grandparents have a bigger garden you could hijack for the day?
Have a wet weather plan!
The British summer isn’t as reliable as many of us would like. When planning your party, consider what you will do if it rains. Do you have enough space to move the party indoors if the weather turns? It is worth borrowing or hiring a gazebo if space allows, not only will this provide a bit of shelter from showers, but will offer some shade on a sunny day.
Food ideas
A traditional party buffet will work almost anywhere, but for a garden party, you could consider doing a BBQ or perhaps offer some summertime favourites such as fish and chips or afternoon tea with strawberries and cream. Having a picnic in the garden works really well as you don’t need to worry about setting up a table for everyone. Throw some rugs on the floor, grab a plate, or pack each child’s food in an individual box and relax!
Entertainment
This will depend largely on the size of your garden and your budget. You could pop on some music, get out in the garden and let everyone amuse themselves, or perhaps hire a bouncy castle. For the ultimate stress free party, why not call in the experts. Most entertainers will happily set up in the garden (they are normally confined to dark village halls!) and it means the children can enjoy the show without missing out on the glorious weather!
Themes
Most party themes work just as well outside (UV glow discos being the exception!) and there are some themes that work even better in the summer! How about a beach themed party with a sandpit, deckchairs and ice creams? And there is something magical about having a fairy party in the garden. Or have a summer fete theme, with bunting and ball games.
Stuck for space?
Still want an outside party but don’t have the space? Head to the park or the beach! Arrange a time and place to meet, grab some outdoor games like rounders or a football. This is great for a family gathering or when you have children of different ages. Everyone can bring their own picnic, or some dishes to share and make a day of it!
