How to plan a surprise party for a child – and keep the secret long enough!

Planning a birthday party can be great fun as well as very stressful, especially when it comes to keeping it a secret! We all know that children have remarkable hearing. They are able to pick up on a secret from the slightest comment, whispered at a barely audible level and then be stone deaf an hour later when you are asking them to tidy their room. Putting their unique auditory skills aside, planning a birthday for anyone you live with can be really difficult if you want to keep the event a secret. So how can you go about keeping a lid on a surprise party for a child whilst planning it?

For some reason we don’t often associate surprise parties with children’s birthday parties today and yet it is a brilliant option to completely astound the birthday boy or girl. Unlike with adults, when planning a surprise birthday party for a child, it is not a good idea to act like you have completely forgotten their birthday (unless you know that they have a very resilient little personality!). As such, you are better off downplaying how you will be celebrating their birthday. For example, explain that this year it will be a family-only occasion.

After that, try to arrange as many of the celebrations online as possible but remember to clear your browser and not to leave anything lying around if you all share a device, like a laptop or tablet. Make the most of school hours and of your lunchbreak if you are at work to make any phone calls that you might need to have so that you aren’t risking being overheard and the surprise is blown. You’ll need to pick out the theme, plan the entertainment, choose and organise the food and catering without any input from the birthday boy or girl. So, speak to friends and relatives that know your little one too, to get their advice on what they think would make the birthday a hit.

With most people being connected online these days inviting guests to your Big Day is much easier to do in secret. You can send out e-invites rather than risking writing physical

invitations and being caught in the act by your child(ren) when you think they have gone to bed!
