How to get more out of your party

Organising your child’s party can seem like a mammoth task. With the venue, catering, entertainment and party bags to organise, all too often parents feel well and truly frazzled by the time the day of the party rolls around. If this sounds like you, read on to find Captain Fantastic’s top tips for getting the most out of your child’s party.

Keep it manageable

Whilst a party for 60 might sound like a lot of fun, it’s a lot of hard work! You’ll obviously be limited in numbers according to your venue, but it’s worth setting your own limit on the number of guests so you don’t feel like you’re feeding the 5000! Keeping the guest list to close friends and people your child sees regularly means they will have plenty of friends to play with, but neither of you will feel overwhelmed.

If you have a large family, consider having a small party just for family separate from the main event. This is especially useful if you have lots of cousins or friends’ children of different ages. Trying to keep everyone amused at a party with a large range of ages is difficult, so tailor your party to suit your child and their friends and invite the family round for cake another day.

Don’t book too much

Children’s entertainer, bouncy castle, petting zoo… There is so much choice out there when it comes to entertainment at children’s parties. Every parent wants to give their child a day to remember and, let’s be honest, there is a little bit of competition when it comes to throwing the best party!

Whilst you might be tempted to throw in everything but the kitchen sink, less really is more in this instance. If you’ve booked a children’s entertainer, having a bouncy castle too will just distract the kids meaning you will have wasted money. Trying to supervise children running from one activity to the next is difficult too, so pick one form of entertainment and stick to it. If you are wanting to add the WOW factor, popcorn machines or face painting are a great addition to a party and, because they are for one child at a time, they won’t distract from the main event.

Prep ahead

Do as much of your party preparations beforehand. Most food, especially cold buffets, can be prepared a day in advance and taken to your venue in Tupperware containers. Blow up balloons, make up the party bags, wrap the pass-the-parcel the day before too. The more you can prepare before the party, the better, as it means you get to mingle with the other parents and enjoy the party with your child. Don’t forget to arrive in plenty of time to set up for your party before guests arrive!
